The Pier Master at Deal Pier was on duty for night fishermen on Saturday when he became concerned for three people in the sea near the Pier at 3.30 in the morning. The weather was warm, the sea was calm and there was no wind, but he was sufficiently concerned to call the Coastguard. Walmer Lifeboat crew was paged and thanks to a very good crew turnout, both Walmer Lifeboats raced to the scene. The Lifeboats found three young local teenage boys just coming ashore from their night swim, apparently safe and a little surprised at the fuss they had caused. Gary Pearce, a helmsman on the Walmer Lifeboat crew spoke to the youngsters and said afterwards "It was a shame that the boys could not wait until Tides (a local swimming pool) opened in the morning."
